Graduate Assistant - Academic Counselor

August 2010 - January 2012

Supervisor - Steven Viveiros, Associate Director

Academic Achievement Center offers a comprehensive array of programs and services to support the continued academic success of Bridgewater State University students.  The center provides learning assistance programs and services such as Tutoring Services, the Writing Studio, Mathematic and Study and Research Services as well as the Honors Program and the Communications Laboratory.  Academic advising is a major function of the Achievement Center.  As an Academic Advisor I wanted to help ensure the mission of the Academic Achievement Center.  Since I have a strong interest in student development and I enjoy working with diverse populations such as students of color and those with learning disabilities, I thought this would be a wonderful place to gain counseling experience that I could use to help set the foundation for my career in school counseling.  In this role my responsibilities were to:

·    Assist with every aspect of each Orientation Registration Program including preparation of student records, testing and the advising process.

·    Assist with implementation of First Year Advising Program, i.e. large, small and probation group advising sessions.

·    Serve as advisor to a case load of first-year students with majors and/or undeclared majors.

·    Assist advisors with all the heavy traffic periods in the advising cycle, i.e. add/drop, course withdrawal deadlines, registration periods.

·    Conduct exit interviews for students withdrawing from college.

·    Provide academic counseling regarding policies and procedures for students seeking late withdrawals, assistance with GPA calculations, etc.

·    Utilize referral skills needed to appropriately direct individuals to resources within the college or community.

·    Act as an advocate and resource person for students, faculty advisors, professional staff, etc.

·    Participate in schedule training and supervisor meetings.

·    Assist with other Academic Achievement Center programs such as programs for readmitted students, students on academic probation, peer advising, etc.

·    Assist and/or conduct research projects as decided by the Director.

·    Assist with additional duties designated by the Director and/or the Assistant Director.
