Professional Memberships:
Chi Sigma Iota - is an international honor society that values academic, leadership and professional excellence in counseling. In 2010, I joined this society to network with other professional counselors, peers and counselor educators and to enjoy the benefits of various educational conferences and workshops.
American School Counselor Association (ASCA): supports school counselors' efforts to help students focus on academic, personal/social and career development so they achieve success in school and are prepared to lead fulfilling lives as responsible members of society. I joined this society because it provides professional development, publications and other resources, research and advocacy to me as well as up-to-date school counseling information and networking opportunities.
Massachusetts School Counseling Association (MASCA): advocates for school counselors in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts by providing leadership, collaboration and professional development. I joined this group because I know that as they are dedicated to providing information and services that will support and advocate for the school counseling profession, I can be confident in my role to advocate for students and their academic, personal and career success. This year was my first of many to come in co-presenting a poster presentation at the MASCA 2011 Spring Conference. The topic was Substance Abuse Awareness for the middle/high school student, which I have attached below. The purpose of this presentation was to provide an increase in the educational component of substance abuse as well as an increased awareness of how it relates to students on a personal level with alternative ways to deal with issues relating to this challenging topic. It is presented as an entertaining, engaging and stimulating game.
American Counseling Association (ACA): is the world’s largest association exclusively representing professional counselors in various practice settings. They provide the professional ACA code of ethics for all counselors to refer to and are used to promote respect for human dignity and diversity. In 2010, I joined this association to network with other professional counselors, graduate students and educators, to stay focused on my moral responsibility and reap the benefits such as the liability (malpractice) insurance included in my membership.
Joining these groups has set the stage and is paving the way for my professional development as I begin my career in school counseling.
